Halloween is one of our favorite holidays. I love all the dressing up, haunted houses and sweet candies. Although Halloween may look a little different this year, you can still find ways to have some safe spooky fun.
Even though we’re vegan, we still like to indulge in sweets just like the average person but of course we find a cruelty free way to do it. It's obvious we don't eat Reese's cups, Snickers, or any commercial chocolate as most contain milk. Most dark chocolate is vegan so that is a great alternative. But did you know candies like Starburst and Gummy Bears contain animal products!? That's right! Here you were thinking you're just enjoying that favorite pink Starburst when in reality you are dining on animal bones and tendons. After all, that is what gelatin is made of and it is in a plethora of popular candies. Most people don't think twice about devouring these candies but being vegan you have to think about these things.
LUCKILY for us, there are LOADS of friendly treats! Check out this link from PETA giving a list of cruelty free candies. I also took the liberty of including a recipe for Rice Krispie treats!
Ingredients:
6 cups Rice Crisp cereal
4-5 cups Dandies Vegan Marshmallows
3 tablespoons plant-based butter
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
Directions:
In a large bowl, add 6 cups of Rice Crisp cereal, set aside.
In a large size pot, melt the butter and add vanilla extract.
Add 4-5 cups of marshmallows to the pot. Make sure marshmallows are fully melted before adding to rice crisps.
Immediately add marshmallows to crisp cereal and stir until cereal pieces have been covered with the marshmallow mixture.
Spread into a foil pan and let cool in the refrigerator for a few hours.
Slice into squares or your favorite spooky szn character and enjoy!
Kinky Tip: Add a scoop of peanut butter and orange food coloring if you’re making this for Halloween!
